Bipartisan HOPE Act Offers Federal Grants for Cannabis Expungements

Writer: Will FurtadoWill Furtado

Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Dave Joyce (R-OH) have introduced bipartisan legislation to assist state level cannabis expungement with federal grants. The Harnessing Opportunities by Pursuing Expungement (HOPE) Act creates a system of federal grants, to be administered by the Department of Justice and Attorney General, that would help cover the administrative costs of identifying and clearing eligible cases. The bill proposes to appropriate $2 million in funding to support the program for each fiscal year starting in 2023 and ending in 2032.

A copy of the draft legislation is available here.
